Well, I   'll be damned
Here comes your gh   ost again
But that's not un   usual
It's just that the m   oon is full
And you happened to c   all.
Here I sit
Hand on the te   lephone
Hearing a voice    I'd known
A couple of light y   ears ago
Heading straight for a f   all.

As    I remember your eyes
Were bluer than    robin's eggs.
My poetry was l   ousy, you said.
Where are you    calling from ?
A booth in the Midw   est.
Ten years ago
I bought you some c   uff links.
You brought me s   omething.
We both know what memor   ies can bring
They bring diamonds and r   ust.

Well,    you burst on the scene
Already a    legend.
The unwashed phe   nomenon
The original    vagabond
You strayed into my a   rms.
And there you stayed
Temporarily l   ost at sea.
The Madonna was yours f   or free.
Yes, the girl on the half-sh   ell
Would keep you unh   armed.

Now I    see you standing
With brown leaves falling
All around
And snow in your h   air.
Now you're    smiling
Out the window
Of that crummy hotel
Over Washington S   quare.
Our br   eath comes out
White clouds
Mingles, and hangs in the a   ir.
Speaking s   trictly for me
We both could have died then and th   ere.

Now you're   telling me you're not nos   talgic
Then give me another w   ord for it
You who are so g   ood with words
And at keeping things v   ague.
Because I need some of that vagueness now
It's all come back too c   learly.
Yes, I loves you dear   ly
And if you're offering me
Diam   onds and rust
I've already    paid.
